Our Team's Inspiration Games!
Welcome to the first blog post of Team 4's game titled: Don't Fear Death! We are so delighted that you're excited about our game and are interested in it's development! This itch devlog page will be where we post all of our updates, so feel free to check back in once in a while to see what we're up to.
Our game must fit the criteria of three genres: crafting, shooting, and mystery. To start our journey towards crafting our dream game, we first brainstormed some games that we have played in the past that we can use as inspiration towards our design.
One of our main inspiration games is called Half Dead. In this game, players are given four options of doors in which they can open, but the task and puzzle behind it remains a mystery until it is opened. The goal of the game is to be the last player standing and survive all traps. We loved the idea of mystery behind the doors and wanted to try creating a game that followed a similar beat puzzle-wise. From this game, we are taking inspiration from the RNG of the puzzles behind each door.
Another inspiration game of ours is a series of games under the title Fears to Fathom. In this game, which claims to be based on real life stories, players must navigate through a narrative horror experience in which they are given tasks through dialogue and narration. The goal of these series of games is usually to survive in the horror space, whether it be from crazy ex girlfriends or cult leaders in a forest. From this game, we were inspired by the simple yet unnerving art style that fits perfectly with the uncanny valley vibe. We want to have similar models in our game in which we plaster human faces onto models and stretch them to fit. This low-quality, grainy, and uneasy art style was a big inspiration for our game, and we hope to convey the same feelings of fear through our own attempt at it. Additionally, we love the story and setting of these games and similarly hope to create a narrative and vibe just as terrifying.
Though we had many more games we were inspired by, one last main inspiration game that we chose to highlight is called Lethal Company. In this game, the player's objective is to collect scrap from moons and sell it to the company in order to meet quota. However, the twist is that players are not alone on the moons, for there are hostile monsters that roam the abandoned areas. We wanted to opt for a similar inventory system in which players are only allowed to carry a certain amount of items. This way, players wouldn't need to sift through a bunch items they have collected in order to find the right one. Additionally, we hope to have a similar interact button where players can use items on their environment like locked doors.
Here is a list of other games that we considered as possible inspiration in case you were curious:
- Pico Park
- Alien Isolation
- Five Nights at Freddy's
- Hello Neighbor
- Escape the Backrooms
- Bendy and the Ink Machine
- Doki Doki Literature Club
- Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes
- Death in Unison
- At Dead of Night
And with this, we begin the process of designing our game to fit the criteria we have been inspired by! We have an idea of what kind of game we want to make, but more on that later once everything is fully fleshed out.
Thank you for taking time to read this, and more updates about our design process will be coming soon! Stay tuned!
